Things you need to know about Ellie Simmons:
1. Ellie is your basic cis white Canadian girl of European descent with a Christian upbringing. She’s even got the whole ‘blue eyes, blonde hair’ thing going on. If you’re the kind of person that’s more visual or likes to do fancasts, picture AnnaSophia Robb.
2. There’s an alignment chart on the internet that has gay-bi-lesbian on one axis and distinguished-functional-disaster on the other. Ellie really tries to be a functional bi but throughout a lot of the book, she stumbles into disaster bi territory. She is very bad at life and adulting sometimes.
3. Ellie has an anxiety disorder that can sometimes lead to panic attacks. She takes anti-anxiety meds and has other ways of dealing with her anxiety - like breathing exercises and physical contact with her friends - so she’s got it mostly under control when the book starts. Of course, events in the book fuck all that up and she struggles with it more than she has in years.
4. Ellie has been sewing for about a decade and cosplaying for almost as long. She makes a bunch of her own clothes, although she leaves winter gear to the professionals. All of her cosplays are 100% handmade by her, including weapons, accessories, etc.
5. She is a huge sci-fi nerd. Her favourite thing is Star Trek but she also loves shows like Firefly and Stargate and Doctor Who. She doesn’t play video games that much but her favourite series is the fictional Ascension, which is loosely inspired by Mass Effect. She’s also not much of a reader but she owns every Star Trek tie-in novel, even the ones that suck.
6. She used to want to be a doctor and her parents are still pushing her hard in that direction but she’s perfectly happy with her nursing degree and her job at Veterans Affairs. She gets to use her degree and help people but she doesn’t have to deal with the high stress environment of working at a hospital.
7. She met Logan during her first year of university and they’ve been best friends ever since. They moved in together the minute they graduated. She met Natalia while working at the VA when Nat was looking for a model for her art classes. They’ve been doing the art classes together for four or five years now.
